Report summary
The evaluated doctoral study of the 3rd level of "Maritime and Transport Science" is
undoubtedly necessary in the region. In Slovenia, it is carried out in this form only at the
Faculty of Maritime Studies and Transport, especially when it comes to topics related to
maritime affairs. Nevertheless, the program does not comprehensively cover the field of
maritime affairs and even more the very broad field of transport, as this is simply not
possible due to the small size of the faculty with limited human resources. The faculty also
involves pedagogical staff from other faculties of the University of Ljubljana in the study
program, mainly in the role of co-mentors. Likewise, it would be useful to invite experts
from the wider community, including from abroad, as holders and performers of subjects
in areas that are important for maritime affairs and transport but cannot be handled by
the faculty's own staff. Perhaps in this way the faculty could attract a larger number of
students, including those from abroad, to the program. Currently, the number of students
is very low, although the conditions for running the program are good and the program is
currently following the trends in the field it covers. The small number of students allows
the study process to be carried out completely individually, mostly in the form of
consultations, which is appropriate for the third level of the study program, but students
would also like to see more interaction, sharing of opinions, experiences, ideas, etc. Also,
the supervision of students and information about their duties related to the preparation
of a dissertation should be better coordinated and less dependent on who supervises a
particular student.
